A giant turtle hovering in front of Parliament House is not something you see every day.
Nor is an enormous kookaburra floating above The National Science and Technology Centre (Questacon).
But during the annual Canberra Balloon Festival you can see these amazing sights plus many more .... like a funny face leading a flotilla of hot air balloons past the National Capital Exhibition flagpole at Regatta Point.
Balloons lifted off from the lawns surrounding the reflecting pools in front of Old Parliament House.
As they rose they floated above the cylindrical tower of the National Science and Technology Centre.....
They drifted peacefully past the the National Library....
...and one seem about to collide with the startling orange arch of the National Museum, as a rowing crew stopped to watch from beneath Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.
Another group of hot air balloons appeared further east, having surprised us by lifting off from somewhere near Fyshwick, probably the Jerrabomberra Wetlands or Dairy Flat. They decorated the sky above and around the National Carillion.
This is my favourite.
These balloons drifted gracefully past the National Gallery ....
... and gently set down at Old Parliament House, where the others had started.

What exactly is that turtle doing? It scares me. Hold me.
Wow! These photos are visually very spectacular!!!
We think a lone balloon floating over is quite amazing but that is incredible. Great vantage point you must have had too.
